Community Involvement at a High Level:

Rotary is a Service Club whose members are leaders in the community. Our club includes the mayors of both cities, councilpersons, and other elected and appointed officials of cities and school administrations. Our membership includes company Presidents, CEOs, Board Chairs, Directors and sole proprietors. We even have some Aggies and Attorneys.

More than 75 men and women, including honorary members, are proud to be members of the Rotary Club of Carrollton-Farmers Branch, and most of them are also involved in other community organizations, such as City Councils, Boards and Commissions, Non-Profits and Chambers of Commerce. However, this local participation doesn't diminish the work that they do as part of Rotary.

Charitable Contributions: Each year this club raises money for scholarships for local high school students, contributions to local charitable organizations, and international charity projects. Since this club was chartered in November of 1960, we have raised and then given away a sum that is approaching one million dollars. Some of the past recipients of cash donations include Senior Adult Services, Carrollton PAL, Carrollton/Farmers Branch Boys and Girls Club, The Family Place, Metrocrest Social Service Center, Carrollton/Farmers Branch School Age Parent Program and camperships for the North District of the Boy Scouts of America.

Immunizations: For the last seven years, we have joined with the Metrocrest Hospital Authority in a free immunization program that sees Rotarians, paramedics, school nurses and other community volunteers insure that school-age children were current on their vaccinations.

Literacy: Last year, we continued our association with Farmers Branch Elementary School to help in the effort to improve literacy. When school is in session, seventeen or more members visit the school every week and read to the students.

Carrollton PAL: This Rotary club was instrumental in getting a 15 passenger van donated to the Carrollton PAL organization from Sam Pack's Lee Jarman Ford, making it possible to transport the boys and girls to various sporting events.

Drug Prevention: We continued to sponsor students to attend the Anti-Drug Red Ribbon Breakfast. In the past seven years we have sponsored the attendance of over three hundred students and Rotarians.

Holiday Contributions: We have supported the Metrocrest Social Service Center Holiday Program with donations of food, clothing, and toys for many years, and we even feed the volunteers who have helped with the fund raising and distribution of contributions.

Interact: We currently sponsor Interact clubs (for students 14-18) at Newman Smith High School and Mary Grimes Alternative High School, and are working to sponsor ones at R.L. Turner and Creekview. Designed to teach the rewards of community service, students at Newman Smith donated in excess of 250 hours of community service work last school year.

Rotaract: We inaugurated a Rotoract club (for college students) at Brookhaven College in the winter of 1996-97. Operated similarly to our Rotary club, it shows the rewards of community service, and Brookhaven students collected and distributed clothing to homeless children as their first service project.

For every "high profile" activity, our club is involved in ten other activities that do not make the newspapers. A major motivation of our Rotarians is:

"Service Above Self."
